Technician Classes to Begin

SWIPA member David Miller, R.Ph. will begin the SWIPA Pharmacy Technician Training Class, on Thursday, January 26th at St. Mary’s Medical Center.  The classes are approved by the Indiana State Board of Pharmacy and meet the requirements for technician training.  The cost of the program is $100.  The fee covers the textbook and membership in SWIPA.  For times and locations, those interested should contact David Miller at Wal-Mart Pharmacy West at (812) 426-1679 or at home at (812) 985-2042.

SWIPA Membership Dues

Dues for SWIPA for 2006 will once again be $25.00.  A copy of the renewal application is on the back page of the SWIPA News this month.  For additional copies, click here.  SWIPA membership is open to all pharmacists and technicians who practice or live in the southwest Indiana area.

Your dues help to cover the costs of some SWIPA functions (social meetings and the Past-President’s Dinner), cover postage for the newsletter, pay for web-hosting for the SWIPA website, and support annual SWIPA scholarships ($1000 each) to a Butler and Purdue pharmacy student from our area.

Your membership gives you access to continuing education programs provided at local restaurants by the pharmaceutical industry and on occasion, other members of SWIPA.  The real value of our organization, however, is found in the fellowship and exchange of ideas and information between members at our meetings.

The Board of Directors thank you for your past support, hope you continue to renew your membership in SWIPA, and encourage you to ask your colleagues to join.  Sign up today!

The Hoosier Rx Program Lives!

By now, we and many of our elderly have dealt with the nightmare that is Medicare Part D.  Some of these seniors were enrolled in the Hoosier Rx program and previously received their medications at significant discounts.  Rumors were that the Hoosier Rx program was completely shut down when Medicare Part D began on January 1st.  The program is not dead, but now provides subsidies to low-income seniors to reduce the premiums, deductibles, copays, and coverage gaps for their Part D plans.  Low-income seniors who are not on Medicaid or traditional insurance may qualify for Extra Help from Social Security, the Hoosier Rx program, or both.

There is still time to enroll Medicare beneficiaries in the subsidy programs and a Part D plan to help with the costs of their medications.  For more information, refer your customers to the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) office in Indiana at 1-800-452-4800.
